Part 5 of 6: Understanding Your Style - Speed Sorter or Slow Poke

Learning to understand your style, and the styles of those you dwell with, will increase your success and bring more peace and joy during your organizing ventures. Which style are you?

Speed Sorter

  • Decisions come easily for you

  • You see things as black or white, yes or no

  • You work well on your own

  • You are goal oriented

  • You are able to focus on a task and get it done

  • You want to get what you are working on finished so you can move onto the next thing

  • Patience may not be your strong suit and may be something you’ll need to work on especially if you live with a Slow Poke

Slow Poke

  • Decisions are hard because there are so many factors to consider

  • You see different options

  • You want time to consider things

  • You easily get distracted and can go off on bunny trails

  • Being reminded of what matters most in the scheme of what you are trying to accomplish can help you get back on track

  • It may take you many tries to get something completed

  • Fear of making a decision you’ll regret may keep you from making any decision

  • Patience and encouragement from others can help you move ahead and gain confidence in your ability to make the right decisions as you plow through the organizing process

  • Having a friend or professional organizer assist you can be very beneficial in helping you make decisions and reach organizational goals

These two styles, if residing in family members in the same home, can cause much tension. Seek to understand your different styles and remember: different does not mean one of you is right and the other is wrong, it just means you are different. Agreeing on key goals for your current organizing project and talking about how to handle expected struggles ahead of time will give you a greater chance of heading off problems and reaching your goals. Hiring an organizer to help you find balance, compromise and agreement may also be worthwhile if you have tried and not made progress in the past.
