Getting a Vision of a Space Part 3 : How You Want it to Make You Feel

This is the final part in a three part series on understanding your destination by getting a vision of the space you want to create through decluttering, organizing and more. You can more easily create this space by 1) understanding it’s purpose and (2 & 3) defining what you want to feel in this space by using the five senses.

Part Three:  Getting a vision of a space by imagining how you want it to make you feel using an entertainment room as our example

Identifying how a client wants to feel in a room we are organizing helps us determine what to keep, get rid of and add to a room. Bringing in the five senses helps propel a person into a world of feeling through sights, smells, sounds, textures and tastes. What fun, that we can create environments that help us feel energized and excited by our choices in things like colors, music, scents and the amount of things we have in the space and the amount of breathing room between things in that space.

So the big question here is to ask yourself, “What do I want to feel in this space?”

In this part of the series we’ll jump into an entertainment room where you envision people gathering to talk, play games and watch TV together.

If you want a room filled with opportunities to interact and spend time with family and friends in fun and meaningful ways that make you feel connected, energized and happy here are some sensory things I would suggest to help design that space:

  1. Sights - choose colors that make you feel happy and blend well together with pops of bright colors and some bolder patterns to energize the space, comfortable furniture that can swivel, transform (i.e. smaller to larger table) and/or be moved to accommodate the types of activities you like to do and the number of people who will typically enjoy this space with you. Fun and humorous wall hangings or pieces around the room are perfect here. Storage for easy access to the games you like to play will be helpful.

  2. Smells - Scents are personal, so have fun choosing candles, oils and other items that bring in the scents you love. If you’re not sure here are five oils that are said to increase energy and relieve fatigue: peppermint, sweet orange, spearmint, rosemary, lemon.

  3. Sounds - Music and a TV with high quality sound are most likely key for you in this room. What songs get your pulse racing or your heart and lungs singing? Make a playlist of your favorites and be ready to jump into joy at any moment or dance the time away with your spouse and little ones. The best sounds of all are words of love, laughter, praise and encouragement. Think about what you can say to those you love to spend time or what activities will help bring these things about (i.e. games, joke books, poetry, reading from the Psalms).

  4. Touch - you’ll be grateful to have comfortable and durable fabrics in an active space like this with some lively patterns added to the mix. Cozy blankets are ideal for times of TV viewing.

  5. Taste - snack foods and drinks pair well with an entertainment zone and a tray or two will help corral these items and make clean up faster and spills more manageable.

Enjoy contemplating the feelings you want to drum up in your entertainment space and batting around ideas. Have fun and be creative in how you can make this space more entertaining for you and those you spend time with.
