This is number two in a three part series on understanding your destination by getting a vision of the space you want to create through decluttering, organizing and more. You can more easily create this space by 1) understanding it’s purpose and (2 & 3) defining what you want to feel in this space by using the five senses.

Part Two:  Getting a vision of a space by imagining how you want it to make you feel using a master bedroom as our example

Identifying how a client wants to feel in a room we are organizing helps us determine what to keep, get rid of and add to a room. Bringing in the five senses helps propel a person into a world of feeling through sights, smells, sounds, textures and tastes. What fun, that we can create environments that help us feel peace or feel excitement by our choices in things like lighting, colors, music, scents and the amount of things we have in the space and the amount of breathing room between things in that space.

So the big question here is to ask yourself, “What do I want to feel in this space?”

If you’re cleaning out a drawer there may not be a lot of emotion attached to it, but if using that drawer frequently causes you a sense of frustration, seek to identify what about it is frustrating to you and how to eliminate whatever that is. Just doing that and being able to open the drawer without feeling frustrated is a big improvement and worth the time it will take to make those changes.

Let’s look at two spaces with totally different desired feelings attached. In this part of the series we’ll uncover a master bedroom where you crave a feeling of love and peace and in the next part of the series we’ll jump into an entertainment room where you envision people gathering to talk, play games and watch TV together.

If you are seeking a master bedroom filled with things that make you feel loved and at peace here are some sensory things I would suggest to help you be cocooned in those feelings:

  1. Sights - soft neutral colors and simple patterns used on the walls, bedding and furniture, fewer pieces of furniture with more space between pieces to give more breathing room between things and minimal things on surfaces or the walls. Soft natural lighting, dimmer switches to control how much you see or don’t see at any given time, which is great for this space. Display things that make you feel loved, special, at peace (i.e. wedding photo, vacation print, a special card you have received with words of love inside, inspirational quote, a few items you deeply treasure from people you love). Wear sleeping attire that makes you feel attractive.

  2. Smells - fragrances stir up memories and emotions in us. Do you know the unique smell or cologne of the one you love? If you like the idea of using oils to help you relax you can experiment with lavender and rose among others. Candle scents can return you to a romantic or relaxing destination, just remember to blow them out before you fall asleep. Have fun remembering and choosing how to use scents in your room.

  3. Sounds - music is one of the quickest ways to evoke feelings and memories. Maybe a nature oriented sound machine is just what will help you sleep through the night or maybe tonight is the night to use songs of love to enhance the physical intimacy between you and your spouse

  4. Touch - soft, silky, sensuous, breathable textures are desirable in a master bedroom. Pick bedding that not only looks great but feels divine and breaths in a way that helps you sleep through temperature changes in your body and room. Using oil, smoothly massage your spouse into arousal or sleep. Enjoy the luxury of being able to touch, hug, kiss and cuddle with the one you love. This is the place to indulge in textures that make you want to purr like a cat and wrap yourself in bedding that invites you to sleep in on your days off.

  5. Taste - Chamomile tea is known for helping people to relax and for more restful sleep. Indulge in a beloved cup of tea before you sleep. Put on a color free lip gloss that tastes great and makes your lips more kissably sweet.

Enjoy dreaming of the feelings you want to bloom in your bedroom and how you can nurture them to fruition. The next part in this series will show you how to apply the same principles of creating your vision of a space based on the feelings you want to break forth in a room where the purpose is entertainment, fun and games, TV viewing and interacting with others.
